ザンビアから南アフリカのヨハネスブルグを経由して、南アフリカで3番目に大きな都市で港町として知られるダーバンへ向かいました。ダーバンを海沿いに東へ進むと、Hluhluwe（ヒュルヒュルイ）というサファリパークがあります。サファリパークといっても96000ヘクターもの巨大な土地で、ビッグ５と呼ばれるライオン、像、バッファロー、ヒョウ、サイを含む様々な野生動物が生息しています。「ビッグ５」とは体の最も大きな動物を指しているのではなく、捕まえるのが最も難しいトップ５の動物たちのことです。だからキリンは含まれていないのですね。また、Hluhluweは絶滅の危機にある白サイを保護しているサファリパークであることでも有名です。
We left Zambia for Durban via Johannesburg. Durban is the 3rd largest city in South Africa and famous for a busiest port in Africa. There is a safari park called Hluhluwe which covers 96000 hectares with Big 5 – Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino – and various wild animals. By the way ‘Big 5′ means not the biggest animals but the most difficult animals to catch, that’s why giraffe is not included. Hluhluwe is also know to protect White Linos from extinction.

滞在先はHluhluwe River Rodgeのハネムーンロッジです。目の前には大きな湖があるはずだったのですが、乾季が続き3年間も水がない状態なんだそうです。
We stayed in Honeymoon lodge in Hluhluwe River Rodge, which faces the big lake except the lake has been dried out for this 3 years!

ロッジからサファリパークまでは専用のオープンカーで向かいます。自分の車でも行けるのですが、ガイド付きでしかもオープンカーの方が楽しめそうです。野生動物は、人間が車から降りた途端ににおいを嗅ぎ付け襲ってくるのだそうですが、オープンカーでも車体の内部にいる限り安全なのだそうです。
We head for the safari park by an open car provided by the lodge. It is possible to go there by own car, but something about an ‘open car’ was really attractive. Wild animals immediately smell human being as soon as we get off a car, but do not seem to understand us as long as we stay within a car.

ジュラシックパークへこそ！！不思議な世界に迷い込んだようです。
Welcome to Jurassic Park! The most surreal moment of the whole holiday!!

写真からもご想像できる通り、かなり多くの動物たちに遭遇することが出来ました。残念ながらヒョウを見つけることは出来ませんでしたが、道を渡ろうとしている像に威嚇されたり偶然ライオンの親子に出会えたりと、とても満足の出来るサファリ体験でした。
From the photos provided, you will see we managed to see most of animals we wanted except for the Leoperd. Although we were nearly attacked by passing elephants, we had a great time!

サファリは何度来ても飽きそうにありません。また近いうちに訪れたいと思います。今度こそヒョウに出会えることを願って・・・。
I would love to come here again, next time hoping to bump into Leopard
