私は日本では１００％イヌ人間でした。周りにネコを飼っている人が少なかったというのもありネコの扱い方は全く分かりませんでした。でもイギリスはネコ王国で、ほとんどの家庭でネコを飼っているといっても過言ではないくらいです。そして私もネコの魅力に気づき始め、ネコが飼いたくなったのです。
I was a 100% dog person in Japan, I had no idea how to treat cats as no one close to me had cats. However, England is a ‘cat country’ and almost all family have cats. I started getting attracted to cats and wanting to have one!
イギリスには各町にアニマル保護センターがあります。私たちはそこで保護されて行き先のないネコちゃんをもらおうと決めました。ところが、今の賃貸フラットは１階であること、庭がないことなどから、「適性検査」に合格出来ずネコを譲ってもらえないことが判明。たっぷりの愛情をあげる自身はあると言ったのに「ネコは庭が好きだから」の一言。庭があったって動物虐待している人はいっぱいいるだろうに！
There are animal rescue centres in towns so tried to request one abundant cat, but we could not pass a criteria as we live first floor without garden. Although I told them we had confident to give lots of TLC, they insisted we should have a garden…
ちなみにイギリスのネコの飼い方は、右の写真のようなキャットフラップという小さなネコ
用のドアをキッチンから庭に出るドアなどに取り付け、家の中と外を自由に行き来させるのが普通です。ネコは「家に付く」動物で、かつ時間で行動する動物です。そのため一人でお散歩に行き、外のどこかでトイレし、食事の時間にはきちんと帰ってくるのです。トイレなんですが、用を足す前にキチンと穴を掘り、その中に用を足し、終わった後はちゃんとその穴を埋めるんです。ネコってエライ。
In England people usually have a ‘cat flap’ like right picture, and let cats in and out whenever they want. They go for a walk, toilet, meeting friends and come back to home when they need sleep and eat. Cats even dig a hole for toilet and bury it. How clever they are.
さて、アニマル保護センターが駄目だったので、今度はイギリスの情報サイトで探しはじめました。ここで驚いたのが、子猫は人気があるためか100ポンドや200ポンドなどという値段で売りに出されていました。そのうちの１つが車で15分位のところだったので、早速見に行ってみましたが、その方は政府の保護を受けたカウンシルハウスに住むシングルマザーで、たった9ヶ月のメスネコに子猫を産ませ、そこからお金を稼いでいるという人だったのです。我々の税金を使って生活し、かつ動物を使って稼いだお金でホリデーにでも行っているのかと思うと、とても許せなくなり、愛猫家ではなく金儲けのために子猫を売っている人間からは買うもんか！と心に決めたのでした。
Anyway, as we could not get a cat from animal rescue centre, we started searching a community site called Gumtree. Astonishingly kittens are sold with high price – 100 pounds to 200 pounds. One of them were quite close to our place so we went to have a look only to find out that the owner was a typical English single mother who relies on a government benefit and lives in a council house using our tax. I got upset knowing that she lets 9 month old cat pregnant and makes money out of kittens. I would like to ‘buy’ a kitten from a cat lover rather than a person who uses animal to make money!
そうこうしている間に、「11ヶ月のネコをもらっていただけませんか」という連絡が入りました。その方は獣医の卵で、自宅には蛇、トカゲ、その他もろもろの昆虫や生き物がいて、そのネコちゃんは臆病でいつもソファーの後ろに隠れてしまっているのだそうです。写真をみたらとってもかわいいネコちゃん。ということで早速、Tillyが我が家にやってきたのです！！
Meanwhile, we had an offer from a VET student whose 11 month cat was simply not happy with her place where snakes, rizzard, and various insects and animals exist. The cat looked very cute in the photo, and we decided to get her. Tilly finally came to our house!
最初は怖がっていたものの、時間が経つにつれ我が家にも慣れてきて、毎朝仕事に行く前に外に出してあげることにしました。夜仕事から帰ってくると、ちゃんと玄関の前で「おかえり～～！」と出迎えてくれます。家に帰る楽しみが一つ増えました◎
She was in the beginning very shy and frightened with small noises but getting used to it as time went by. We let her outside every morning, and she welecomes us when we get back home in the evening. She is such a lovely cat!
