Easter Holiday in Bristol
ウェールズの帰りに、バイロンのお友達のJamieを訪ねてブリストルという街に立ち寄りました。ここにはエイボン川に架かる、長さ約200メートル、高さ約70メートルのクリフトン吊り橋があります。ビクトリア時代に偉大なエンジニアIKブルーネルによって設計され、現在も車両の通行が許されている吊り橋です。
On the way back from Wales, we stopped at Bristol to visit Byron’s friend Jamie. A bridge over Avon river called Clifton Suspension bridge which length of about 200meter and the heightof about 70 meter is the most famous spot in Bristol. This was built in 1864 by an enginner IK Brunel and currently still cars are allowed to across.

あまりの高さと強風による揺れに足が震えてしまい渡ることが出来ませんでした（高所恐怖症？）。ふと横の崖を見ると、なんと若者二人が崖にへばりついていました！大変！！救急車！！警察！！！と思いきや、彼らはロッククライマーなんだそうです。ここブリストルはロッククライミングが盛んな街なんだそうです。今回ここを訪れた理由も、最近ロッククライミングを始めたバイロンが、ロッククライマーであるJamieと、一緒にクライミングを楽しむためでした。
I was too afraid of crossing the bridge as it was very windy day (I might be an acrophobia). When I looked at a cliff beside the bridge I saw two young men hanging the cliff!! Oh dear!! Call an ambulance and police!! … in fact they were rock climbers. In fact Bristol is very popular rock climbing location. The one of the reason why we visited here was in order for Byron – who recently started it as a hobby – to climb with a rock climber Jamie.
早速、教会が改装されてロッククライミングの設備を整えたところへ行きました。バイロンがクライミングしているときはJamieが下でハーネスを支えます。その逆にJamieの際はバイロンが支えます。各セクションが初級、中級、上級、エキスパートなどという風に分かれているのですが、Jamieはどこまでもぐんぐん上っていける強モノです。
There was a popular rock climbing place which used to be a church. When Byron is climbing, Jamie controls harness, and vice versa. You can choose easy, medium, hard and expert. Jamie can go up and up at an expert section.
ロンドンにも大きなロッククライミング場があります。雨の多く寒いイギリス、インドアで出来るホビーがあるというのはいいことですね。
There is also a big rock climbing place in London. As it is generally cold and raining, it is nice to have a hobby which can be done inside.
