今１７週目です。
I’m now at 17 weeks.

ちょっと気が早いかもしれませんが、子供が産まれた後の教育について考えてみました。イギリスでイギリスの学校に行かせる限り、英語が第一言語であった方が子供にとって有利だとは思うものの、日本人として、そして日本に家族がいる私としては、日本語と日本の文化・教養はきちんと教え込みたいと希望しています。そしていつか日本に住む日が来るかもしれないと考えると、やはり日本語教育は重要になります。
I have started thinking about an education for my baby (I know it’s a bit too early…). As long as s/he goes to a local school it would be of course better to speak English as a first language, however, as a Japanese and the fact of having a family in Japan, I am hoping to be able to give her/him a good Japanese education to learn my language and culture. Moreover if we plan to move back to Japan in the future,  it is an extremely important matter to give the education.

そこでどんな対策が可能か、イギリスで子育てをする日本人ママからいろいろと情報収集したところ、私に出来そうなことはこの４点。
What I could do to succeed it…. I gathered some information from Japanese mums in the U.K.

１．日本語で話しかける。
これまでは自分の英語力の向上も兼ねてByronともずっと英語で話していましたが、子供が出来たら家の中では決して英語は話さないと決めました。

1. Speak Japanese at home.
At the moment I always speak English to Byron in order to blush up on my English. But I have decided to ONLY speak Japanese and NEVER speak English at home once the baby was born.

２．国際児童文庫教会に参加する

各地で国際児の親たちのボランティアによる活動です。地域によって差はありますが、月に数回ほど子供たちに日本語の文庫を読み聞かせる集まりです。日本語の本の貸し出しも行っています。また、季節の行事なども行うようなのでこれは便利。対象年齢が気になるところですが、２歳から３歳くらいから参加できそうです。

2. Join an International Children’s Bunko Association

This is a ‘a voluntary organisation run by parents and other adults who want to work with bilingual and bi cultural children and help them, through sharing picture books and related activities, to be proud of their other language and enjoy using it with other children and adults’. Its gather up is various depending on areas but it seems like it is generally held once or twice in a month, and children seem to be able to join from 2 or 3 years old.

３．ロンドン日本人補習授業校に通わせる

日本の小学校・中学校があり、日本語の教科書を使用して学びます。授業は毎週土曜日の午前中です。現地の学校と同時進行は大変かもしれないけれど、これは必須です。

3. Join a Japanese school

There are a primary class and secondary class, which are held every Saturday morning. It will be a hard schedule to go to this class as a parallel of a normal school, but to attend this is a compulsory to me!

４．日本に頻繁に帰る

やはり日本語を話す環境にしばらくいると上達するようなので、今後のホリデーの行き先はほとんどは日本になると思われます。南アに行く回数がぐっと減りますが、そのくらいの妥協は仕方がない。

4. Going back to Japan often
It is always the best way to be in a country where people speak a language you want to learn. I will try to go back to Japan as much as possible to take our chickpea to Japan. Our annual holidays are limited (I only get 20 days!) so I am sure Byron can take him/her to SA by himself if I used up my leave.

と、こうやって頑張っても、いざ現地の学校に行き始めると、両親が日本人であっても子供同士は英語で話してしまうとのこと。私の英語よりもきれ～な英語をしゃべり、LとRの発音おばっちりになり、挙句の果てには「ママの英語分からない」なんて小生意気なことを言われるんだろうなぁ・・・。ムカッ。
Nonetheless, it seems children speaks English more once going to a local school even if their both parents are Japanese…. My kid will start pronouncing much better than me and be able to distinguish L and R, then in the end I will be told ‘Mummy’s English is strange!’… Dammit!
