Maternity leave by law

現在のイギリスの法律では、産休は1年間取れることになっていますが、そのうち産休手当てが出るのは9ヶ月間だけです。細かい振り分けは下記の通り:
- 最初の6週間:現在のお給料の90%
- 次の33週間:毎週一定額(123.06ポンド)
- 残りの13週間:なし
この期間中、有給休暇を取る権利もあります。細かいことはこちらのサイトを参照。
By current UK law, pregnant women who have full time job are eligible to take a maternity leave for 52 weeks (1year). First 9 month are paid leave which is called Statutory Maternity Pay
, and rest of 3 month are non-paid leave. The details are:
- First 6 weeks: 90% of salary will be paid
- Next 33 weeks: 123.06 pounds per week will be paid
- Rest of 13 weeks: None
Annual holiday can be taken within this period. (Refer here)

産休を取る長さは人それぞれで、半年で職場に復帰する人もいれば、9ヶ月で戻る人、更にはまるまる1年とる人もいます。現在私の働いている会社には日本人は私のみなので、この産休中どうしたもんかと考えたところ、産休中も自宅でパートタイムとして働くことを決意しました。 これが上司に受け入れてもらえるかはちょっと定かではなかったのですが、無事、その契約書を本日交わしました!内容は下記の通り:
- 最初の6週間:お給料の90%が出ている間は働かない。
- 次の33週間:お給料の50%をもらい、50%分の仕事を自宅で行なう。
- 残りの13週間:上記同様、
お給料の50%をもらい、50%分の仕事を自宅で行なう。
- 状況によっていつでも変更が可能
Some people take maternity leave for 6 month, some takes 9 month, some takes 1 year. There is only one Japanese person in a company I work for, therefore I was thinking what I should do about my maternity leave, then I made my mind to work as a part-time during this 52 weeks. I wasn’t sure if my boss will accept this decision but today both my boss and myself signed a contract!! The details are:
- First 6 weeks: Do not do any work
- Next 33 weeks: Do 50% work from home with 50% pay
- Rest of 13 weeks: Same as above. Do 50% work from home with 50% pay
- If there are some difficulties to keep this contract, I can change it anytime.

つまり2010年早々から産休に入り、まるまる1年間出勤しなくて良いと言う事になります。うれし~~。恐らく何回かはオフィスに顔を出すことになると思 いますが、それはそれで同僚と会えるのは気晴らしになって良いだろうと思っています。
イギリスはなんといってもまだまだ物価が高く、一人のお給料だけでは苦しいというのが本当のところです。なので私の50%のお給料が入るというのは家計の 足しになるし、仕事を少しずつこなすということで、いざ産休が終わった際にも職場に戻りやすいし、何よりも仕事をキープできるというのが大きな利点です。 そうでないと、産休中仕事のことが心配でたまらないだろうと思います。
そんなわけで、今日はほっと一安心してしまいました。気を緩まず年末までにやっておくべきプロジェクトをを終わらせるぞ!
This means I will go on maternity leave from the beginning of 2010, and won’t have to commute whole year! Wooohoooooo!!! I will probably pop in an office several times but it will be good to see my colleagues occasionally.
Living cost in this country is very high, so it is always good to have second income. Also it will be easier for me to go back to work after maternity leave if I keep in touch with work. Furthermore good to know that I will be able to keep the job. Without this contract I will most likely be worried about work and my circumstances during the leave.
I’m so relieved to have made this contract. I will make my full effort to complete all my projects by the end of December!

ちなみに、妊娠していることを証明する証書(MAT B1フォーム)を雇用主に提出する必要があります。これは妊娠20週目以降、GPかミッドワイフからもらえます。昨日早速GPに会ってもらってきました。
By the way, in order to take a maternity leave you will need to hand in MAT B1 form to your employer. You can get this from GP or midwife after 20 weeks of pregnancy. I got it from my GP yesterday and handed it in to work.

    Hello Mika,

    Your blog about “chickpea” is really getting exciting. I am glad that you are okay and all is going well with the pregnancy. The scans are amazing and very clear!! I also think it is a girl now that I have seen the scans. No weenie there!! I hope you are getting enough rest.

    Very good news about your job. It will be good to have the first year at home with your baby and knowing that your job is secure is even better. So nice to hear Byron is so excited about “chickpea”. I cant wait to meet her one day. I will keep in touch and let you know when I am sending the parcel.     Hi Sue, the ‘kick’ is getting stronger and now can be felt from outside, so Byron always asks me ‘is she kicking now? is she kicking now?’ hahaha
    The scan pics are really clear. I love the one chickpea is showing off her leg! ;-)
    I recently started getting crump on my both legs again. Probably because my tummy is getting bigger and my legs can’t hold the extra weight… Having a nice bath in the evening is the most relaxing time for me now :-) xxx Mika

    You are lucky about your maternity leave! here in South Africa, you are entitled to 4 months leave, but your employer does not have to pay you. You can claim from UIF (goverment fund) for the 4 months but this works out to about 40 – 50% of your normal pay! So you are a lucky mommy :)
    I was very lucky with my work – they paid me 2/3rds of my pay for the 4 months, and I managed to claim back the other 1/3 from UIF. I would have loved to have more time off! enjoy every minute because it goes so fast! Lots of love to you all!

    Hi Kerry, so you actually managed to get 100% of your salary within the 4 month? Wow, very well done!! You are also able to come home a bit early now with full paid, aren’t you? That’s very nice, too.
    I’m not sure if I can manage both 50% work and looking after a baby, but I will try anyway. As you say it is nice to be able to stay at home for 1 full year :-)

    I did – lucky me :) and I am lucky enough to get my full salary and get to leave work early – not sure for how much longer though. You will cope just fine :) When you are a mum, you just have to! when baby is little it will be easier, cos they just sleep and eat, its when baby is mobile you might struggle but you will be fine! I know it :) xxx
