Family Do 2009
8月中旬のことになりますが、イギリスのKent州で大ファミリーパー ティーがありました。イギリスにファミリーなんていたの？？とまずは疑問に思いましたが、いたんです、大きなファミリーが！
そもそもByronの実のお父さん（Ray）はイギリス産まれのイギリス育ちで、20代で南アに渡りました。その後イギリスにいるRayの兄弟や親戚につ いてはByronも詳しく知らなかったようですが、RayがFacebookを使い始めたことがきっかけで親戚の輪が広がっていたのです。 Facebookとは日本で言うミクシィのようなソーシャルネットワーキングサイトで、今日はこんなことをしたとか撮った写真をアップロードし、そこにコ メントを書いたりすることが出来ます。本名を使って登録するので昔の友人などを探しやすくなっています。もともと若い世代から始まりましたが、最近では両親の世代までネットワークが広がってきています。
It was in the middle of August, we were invited to a big family party in Kent. Do we have family in this country?? Yes, we indeed have a big family! To cut a long story short, Byron’s biological father Ray was born and brought up in the UK, then moved to SA when he was early 20s. Byron really didn’t seem to know about Ray’s brothers or relatives until Facebook brought the family network to him from Ray. Facebook was initially used by younger generation but recently it has spread to our parents’ generation. Thankfully Ray is a Facebook user.
RayがFacebook上で親戚とのネットワークを広げ、それがByronにも広がり、年に1回8月に行なわれるという大ファミリーパーティーの存在を知り、参加することになったのです。本来、全く知らない人だらけのパーティーは好きではないのですが、家族となったら話は別です！60人から80人集まる というそのパーティー、どんな人がいるのか楽しみで仕方がありませんでした。毎年テーマに沿ったコスチュームを着るそうで、今回は60年代風という指定が あったそうなのですが、直前まで知らなかったので普通の服装で参加することにしました。そして一品持ち寄りということで、巻き寿司を作りました。
Through the Facebook, we were invited to a big family party which is held once a year in August. I generally hesitate to go to a party with full of stranger, but it is a totally different story if it comes to a family! Around 60 to 80 people seemed to be gathering up, so I was very very looking forward to meeting English relatives! Every year there seem to be a certain theme, and this year’s one was ‘Something 60s’, but we didn’t know about the theme until a few days before, so we just wore normal cloths. And I made Sushi for the party 
会場はRayのいとこのTracyのお宅です。お庭がとっても広く、飾りつけやみんなの衣装もとてもかわいく、よくテレビや映画などで見るイギリスの典型 的なガーデンパーティーといった感じで、デ・ジャ・ブ？と思う不思議な感覚にとらわれました。参加者の年齢は80才代から生まれたての赤ちゃんまで！そし て遠い遠い親戚にあたる人たちもみんな私たちの参加を温かく迎えてくれました！Tracyの家はKent州にあり、我が家からは車で1時間、ロンドンを横断する必 要がありましたが、それ以外の親戚の多くはなんと南西部、我が家から車で数十分足らずのところに住んでいるとのこと！早速9月のBBQパーティーのお誘い が舞い込みました◎
イギリスには全くファミリーはおらず、天涯孤独を覚悟していただけに、いきなりこんなに多くの人々に会えて、ちょっと寂しんぼだった心が晴れた気がしま す。来年の集まりが楽しみで仕方がありません！来年こそは、みんなと同様泊りがけで参加したいものです。
A place the party was held was at a Ray’s cousin – Tracy’s house. The garden was huge, and decorations and everyone’s costume were so cute, which looked like a traditional English garden party I have seen on TV or movie. I felt strange feeling like de ja vu for some reason. The group varied in age, baby to 80s! Everyone was very welcoming. Although Tracy’s house is in Kent which is 1 hour drive from our place, some of the relatives are actually living in South West area which is really close from our place! Without wasting this opportunity we got an invitation to BBQ party in September at Vicki’s house.
I used to feel a bit lonely without any families in this country, so I was glad that I could meet so many relatives. I am already looking forward to the next year’s party!
