Easter Holiday in Wales
今年のイースターホリデーは南ウェールズへ行きました。ウェールズはイギリスの西方に位置している「グレートブリテン」の一部で、ウェールズ語と英語が公用語です。因みに「グレートブリテン」はイングランド、ウェールズ、スコットランド、北アイルランドを意味するため、単にイングランドというとウェールズは含まれないことになります。言語や国旗もそれぞれ独自のものを持っています。
This yesr’s Easter holiday, we went to South Wales. Wales is located west side of England and one of ‘Great Britain’. Great Britain consist of England, Wales, Scotland and North Irland, therefore if you say ‘England’ it does not include Wales. They have their own languages and flags too.

グレートブリテンの旗はユニオンジャックと呼ばれることが多いですが、この模様はイングランド、スコットランド、および北アイルランドの旗が組み合わさって出来ています。ウェールズはユニオンジャックが作られるずっと以前（13世紀）に既にイングランドに服属していたため、ユニオンジャックには反映されていないそうです。
A flag of Great Britain is often called ‘Union Jack’. This pattern is combined with flags of England, Scotland and North Ireland. The reason why Wales’ flag is not included is because Wales was already a part of England in early stage (13th century), which was before Union Jack was made.
余談になりますが、現在スコットランドは独立運動を進めています。「スコットランド国」が誕生するのもそう遠くないかもしれません。現英首相のゴードンブラウン氏は実はスコットランド人です。彼は密かにスコットランド国の初代首相の座を狙っているのかも・・・。
In this connection I may add that currently Scotland is doing an independence movement from England. It might be close future till we see ‘A country of Scotland’. Gordon Brown prim minister is in fact a Scottish, so he might be aiming at a first prim minister in Scotland…
さて、ホリデー当日ですがあいにくの極寒！あまりの寒さに車の外に出る気分さえしませんでしたが、せっかく来たので観光開始です。ウェールズには古城の跡地が多く点在するので、地図を広げてひたすら城廻りをしました。
On the day of our holiday was unfortunately extremely freezing and windy… We didn’t feel like going outside of our car at all, but we started sightseeing anyway. There are plenty of remaining of old castles in Wales, so we visited castles after castles…
標識や地名など、全てウェールズ語と英語で書かれていました。
All the sigh broads were written in both Walsh and English.
お城以外にも、鍾乳洞へも行ってみました。ここはブレコンビーコン国立公園の中にあり、17キロにも及ぶDan-ｙｒ－Ｏｇｏｆ鍾乳洞、カシードラル鍾乳洞、恐竜公園、Ｏｇｏｆ-ｙｒ－Ｅｓｇｙｒｎ（骨洞窟）がひとまとまりになっています。ヨーロッパで最大級と呼ばれるだけあり、その鍾乳洞そのものの奥行きや、つららの形をした鍾乳石など、それは立派なものでした。また、川が流れているとても神秘的な洞窟もあり、ここでは結婚式を開くことが出来るそうです。
We also went to show caves to see stalagmites. Dan-yr-Ogof which length is over 17km, Cathedral Cave, Bone Cave and dinosaurs park are all located in Brecon Beacon National Park. As it seems to be the largest cave in Europe, the size of stalagmites and stalactites were truly amazing. There was also a rive in the cave which made the cave itself very mysterious. It seems popular to held a wedding ceremony in here.

続いては、現在も電気を供給するために使用されているヨーロッパ最大の風車を見に行きました。ここは現在ナショナルトラストによって管理されています。Dulais川にあるAberdulais滝は、産業に必要となる水車を動かすエネルギーを400年にも渡り供給しているのだそうです。極寒だったこと、また時間も遅かったことなどから人っ子一人いませんでした・・・。
Next, we headed to see one of the biggest water wheels which has still been providing energy. This place is currently run by National trust. Aberdulais falls on Dulais river has provided the energy to drive the wheels of industry for over 400 years. Because it was a fleezing temperature and the time was a bit late, no one else was around…
ウェールズはキャンプサイトが多くあることで有名です。姿形がほとんどなくなった古城の跡地などを発見しながらのサイクリングやドライブは楽しそうです。次回は暖かい（暑い）日を選んで訪れたいものです。
Wales is famous of its various camp sites. It would be fun to cycle or drive finding stones (remaining of old castles). Next time I would love to visit here on warm / hot day..
