イギリスはクリスマス（12月25日）の日は家族でターキーを食べプレゼントを交換し、自宅で過ごすことが一般的です。そのため、電車もバスも運休、街のお店は全て閉まります。その徹底さには驚かされます。当日、Kingstonの街へ行ってみました。普段は買い物客でごった返し渋滞もかなりヒドイのですが、ご覧の通り、人っ子一人いない閑散とした街と化していました。
It is a tradition to stay at home with family eating turkey and exchanging presents on Xmas day in England (for Christian I would say). Therefore, all public transportations and shops will be closed. On the day, we went out to Kingston town to have a look how ‘busy’ it would be. Generally the town is very busy with lots of shoppers and traffic is absolutely chaos but it was absolutely quiet like a ghost town without anyone else around.

この特別な日を一緒に過ごす家族がイギリスにいない私たちは、コッツウォルズに2泊3日で行ってきました。コッツウォルズはイギリス中央部に位置する丘陵地で特別自然美観地域に指定されています。その中で、 画家＆詩人＆インテリア・デザイナーであるウィリアム・モリスがイギリスで一番美しい村と言い、ナショナルトラストによって管理されているバイブリーの村は、丁度雪がチラチラと降っていたこともあって、更に情緒を感じさせていました。
As we do not have any family to spend this traditional day, we decided to go to Cotswolds for 2 nights. Cotswolds is situated in the west-middle of England and has been designated as the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. One of the lovely village is called Bibury where once described by William Morris (writer, designer and artist) as ‘the most beautiful village in England’. The village is now restored by National trust. Luckily it was snowing a bit which made the village more romantic.

コッツウォルズへは車で行くのがお勧めです。有名な村々は観光地化されてしまっていますが、途中途中に見かける蜂蜜色のレンガで作られている家々やあちこちに広がる草原地は自然の姿が残っていて、ドライブに最適な場所です。
I would recommend to go to Cotswolds by car. Most of popular villages are becoming more tourist places, however, you will find small villages which houses are made with honey bricks and fields remains as natural taste.
